DAHIKALA/GOPALKALA [krishna janmashtami prasad]

Janmashtami, birth of Lord Krishna is celebrated all over India. In Maharashtra, people make a human pyramid, the person on the top breaks the earthen pot filled with dahikala. This is called Dahi Handi. Gopalkala or Dahikala is a prasad offered to Lord Krishna on Janmashtami or Gokulashtami. This is very easy and quick recipe which is prepared with beaten rice, puffed rice, curd, cucumber, pomegranate pearls, green chillies, salt, sugar, etc. dahikala is the favourite dish of Lord Krishna. “Gopal” is the name of Lord Krishna and ‘Kala’ means the mixture. On midnight of Janmashtami, these delicious dishes are offered to Lord in order to welcome him on earth. 
This include varieties of sweets and dairy products. One of them is this luscious Gopalkala. It is prepared in temples and offered to Lord Krishna and served as a prasad during the festival for the devotees. In India, it is prepared in every home.  It is extremely easy to prepare and hardly takes few minutes to prepare. So try this recipe on Janmashtami and enjoy the festival.

INGREDIENTS:
1 Cup Curd
1 Cup Poha [beaten rice]
A handful Murmura/ Mamra [puffed rice]
2 tablespoon Grated Fresh Coconut
1 Cup chopped Cucumber
2 Green Chillies, chopped
½ teaspoon Ginger, grated
¼ Cup Pomegranate Seeds
¼ Cup Peanuts, roasted and peeled
¼ Cup roasted Chana Dal[optional] [soaked and roasted]
1 teaspoon Sugar
Salt as needed
¼ Cup chopped Coriander
1 teaspoon Pure Ghee
1 teaspoon Cumin Seeds
METHOD:
STEP 1 – Wash the beaten rice/ poha with water and soak for 2-3 minutes. If using thick poha then soak it for 5 minutes.
STEP 2 - Once it becomes soft, drain all water and keep aside in the strainer for a minute until all water us drained off.

STEP 3 – Add sugar and salt and beat curd and keep aside.
STEP 4 – Now in a mixing bowl, add soaked poha, puffed poha and curd and mix it well. Soak it for 5 minutes.

STEP 5 – Add cucumber, coconut, grated ginger, roasted chana dal, chopped coriander and mix it well.


 STEP 6 - Add pomegranate pearls and mix well.



STEP 7 – Heat a small tempering pan with 1 teaspoon ghee.
STEP 8 – Crackle cumin seeds, add chopped green chillies and let them cook for 1 minute.
STEP 8 – Pout this tempering on poha-curd mixture and mix it well.

  Gopalkala is ready to serve.
NOTES: *You can add finely chopped guava and banana pieces too.
                    *Gopalkala thickens in time, so add more curd and mix while serving.
