PANCHKHADYA / खिरापत [For Ganapati Prasad]

  Panchkhadya is served after pooja during Ganesh Chaturthi  Festival as prasad. This is an easy traditional authentic recipe made in variety of ways in many Marathi homes. It is believed that Panchkhadya is Ganesha’s favourite food. It is very easy to make yet wonderful Naivedya recipe and that’s why thought of sharing with you all for this ongoing Ganapati Festival. This Panchkhadya prasad has long shelf life because we have roasted all the ingredients. The name Panchkhadya is derived as it is made of 5 ingredients of which Marathi name starts with “kh” like Kharik[ dry dates], Khobre [dry coconut], Khismish [raisins], Khadisakhar [rock sugar] and Khus khus [poppy seeds]. This mixture of 5 ingredients is said to be very nutritious for brain and you can stuff it in modak which is again a traditional recipe of modak.

INGREDIENTS:
½ Cup Grated Dry Coconut / खोबार खिस 
1 tablespoon Poppy Seeds/ खसखस 
½ Cup Rock Sugar / खडी साखर/ मिश्री 
¼ teaspoon Cardamom Powder
15-20 Dry Dates/ Kharik or ¼ Cup Dry Dates Powder / खारीक पूड 
10-15 Almonds / बदाम 
10-15 Cashew nuts / काजु 
5-6 Saffron Strands / केशर 
20-25 Raisins / मनुका/ किशमिश 

METHOD:
STEP 1 – Dry roast grated coconut, poppy seeds, almonds, cashewnuts and dates powder separately till light brown in colour.
STEP 2 – Transfer in a bowl/ plate and let it cool for some time.
STEP 3 – After cooling, cut almonds and cashews in small pieces.
STEP 4 – Add rock sugar in mixer pot and make a fine powder.
STEP 5 – Add all ingredients in a bowl. Add cardamom powder and mix well.

STEP 6 – Add saffron strands to the mixture and mix everything well.  [you can roast saffron strands before adding]
STEP 7 – Your panchkhadya prasad/ naivedya is ready.

NOTES -  * Dry roast all ingredients on low flame or they will lose their original taste.
* I used खारीक पावडर for this recipe. But if you are using whole dried dates / खारीक, 
see that you remove the seeds out from the dry dates.
* Dry fruits are totally optional.Their additions makes the panchkhadya more rich and delicious.
* You can reduce or increase quantities as per your requirement.
* Try mixing the panchkhadya mix with your hands for better result.
